Obsidian extensions for Local AI

A short list of Obsidian extensions that work well with a Mac Mini Local AI stack—Smart Connections, Text Generator, Copilot, and Canvas—with links to their docs and GitHub repos.

Why extensions matter

Obsidian on its own is a powerful Markdown notebook. With the right extensions, it becomes the main interface for your Local AI system—connecting notes, chat, models, and visual canvases to your Mac Mini + Ollama stack.

All links below go to the official plugin sites or GitHub repositories. Install from Obsidian’s Community Plugins browser, then configure them to point at your Local AI backend.

Smart Connections

Local RAG & semantic links

Surfaces semantically related notes as you work using embeddings. Think of it as Local RAG inside Obsidian—helps you rediscover old notes and see hidden connections without manual tagging.

  • Connections & Lookup views for semantic search across your vault.
  • Runs locally by default; can also talk to 100+ external APIs if you choose.
  • Pairs well with a Mac Mini Local AI setup for fully private embeddings.

Text Generator

Templates & AI writing

Adds prompt templates and AI-assisted writing directly in Obsidian. Great for summaries, drafts, and bulk edits powered by your Local AI backend or other providers.

  • Supports OpenAI-style APIs, Anthropic, Google, and local backends.
  • Template system for repeatable prompts (meeting notes, reports, emails).
  • Can be pointed at your Local AI gateway instead of cloud vendors.

Copilot for Obsidian

In-vault AI assistant

Chat-based assistant that can search your vault, browse the web, and work with local or remote models. Think of it as an AI sidebar that lives inside Obsidian.

  • Supports any OpenAI-compatible or local model endpoint.
  • Vault-aware search and quick commands for navigation and writing.
  • Good fit when you want “ChatGPT inside Obsidian” but powered by Local AI.

Canvas (core plugin)

Visual knowledge maps

Infinite 2D space for mapping projects, research, and systems. Place notes, PDFs, images, and web pages on a canvas and connect them with labeled arrows.

  • Ideal front-end for Local AI to suggest new connections across projects.
  • Supports text cards, embedded notes, images, PDFs, and nested canvases.
  • Ships with Obsidian as a core plugin—just enable “Canvas” in settings.
